The advent of the Human Genome Project has generated a mass of exciting biological data and has also increased the complexity of the research questions we seek to answer. Maintaining the success of biological research in Wales will hinge on our ability to meet these challenges. For this reason Cardiff University established a specialised unit for the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics research (BB Unit), to work at the cutting edge of biological science.

This project focuses on complex statistical analyses and the development of sophisticated information systems to access and integrate large volumes of biological data. This state of the art facility will help scientists throughout Wales understand the causes of diseases such as Bipolar disorder, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), cancer, Huntington's disease and depression.

The BB Unit has created 13 new posts and will share expertise throughout Wales. It won the backing of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales with a 1.5 million grant through the Research Capacity Development Fund. The Unit also supports biostatistics and bioinformatics training through the development of a variety of postgraduate courses, to include MSc, Diploma and Certificate qualifications.
